Baby Shower

Today was the day! I was throwing my first ever Baby Shower! I will admit that up 'til the event I was extremely nervous. What if I bomb? What if I’m boring? What if I *gasp* start stuttering? What do I say when people talk to me? What do I say if they don't?
I try to avoid crowds like the plague, especially busy social events. I have no idea why they make me nervous, so I continue to throw myself into situations that will hopefully make me overcome it. Of course if you get me one-on-one and I feel comfortable you probably won’t be able to get me to STOP talking or being goofy.
I love the sound of laughter and will do or say anything to make it happen! They do say laughter is the best medicine. :) And laughter seems to open up new friendships, connections, even possibilities within ourselves. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I've heard “You were so quiet and shy when we first met, I never knew you were so fun!” Um, well, I’m not sure what to think (or say) when I hear that, but I usually hear it when I’ve just been laughing with someone. If you think about it, aren’t there a lot of times when laughing with a friend has made an awful day seem so much better? Or when laughing with a stranger gave you an instant connection? Enjoying life together is what overcomes fear and draws us closer.

Birthday Trip

I'm not going to lie, I actually like birthdays, including my own.  This year I along w/ the family was completely spoiled by hubby.   The one thing I have been begging for was to see the Titanic Exhibit at the Henry Ford.  After a brief mix up of hubby dropping us off at the main door, my taking the keys, therefore leaving him w/ a van yelling at him 'key has left vehicle' and random people telling me some guy was yelling for me, it became less eventful.  While he was on the scavenger hunt for a parking space the girls and I were in line waiting....waiting....waiting....when someone who just happened to purchase 5 extra tickets to the Exhibit gave them to us for free!!  Happy birthday to me!! To say I was excited and giggling when he showed up would have been an understatement.  After a long day of a history overload, and 3 crabby girls we went home for cake.

Kiley refused to take a picture with us.

I may have been sneaking swipes of frosting while no one was looking all morning......

Eventful Ride Home

It would figure that I spend the the trip home telling the girls to be quiet and not wake the baby up, when 15 mins from home I look back to see a spider crawling down Kileys blanket. Needless to say I reacted first, thought later and woke her up. BUT at least he died a horrible death by book.  Normally I wouldn't even think of going near one but I knew if I didn't he would be hiding, lurking, waiting for me when I was driving and THEN come out.  For the rest of the ride I was watching the laptop bag like a hawk, once upon arrival hubby immediately checked for the carcase.   Though it might have been mainly to get me to stop whining.

Kalahari Here We Come

After 3 years of working non stop we finally took a break and had a family vacation!  This was our youngest(Kiley) first ever vacation, unless you count the 1st time we went when she was in the womb.  We went to the Kalahari Resort for 2 days, 3 nights, and our trip ended up being even better then expected!  As we were checking in my husband casually asked if there was an possibility for us to be upgraded to the bigger rooms.  After speaking with the manager and much to our surprise they upgraded us to the lodge(FREE).  They had a deal on their Kalahari Facebook page for free tickets for the 6th, but we weren't going to be there that day, so they threw in tickets to their NEW adventure park too!  I'm pretty sure the room we were in was bigger then both of the apartments we lived in before buying a home.  The room came fully equipped with all the basics you need to cook, your only job was to stock the fridge.  We had an awesome view of the Resort from the balcony.  Vince & I were suppose to take turns making breakfast, but he surprised me and made breakfast both days.  The only downside to the trip was me forgetting the cameras at home.  These photos were taken by hubbys phone, I swear I'm really not that terrible at taking pictures lol

Bugs be gone

I really want to start a garden. It's nothing something new; it's always been on my mind. Though I have one eensy-weensy little phobia stopping me: 8 legged creatures from the Nightmare Abyss. If I see a spider in the room, it only takes about 1.8 seconds before I am no longer in the same zip code.

Maia proudly told me she killed a moth today. To which I replied, "That’s great! Now you can kill all the spiders for mommy."

Bragging now, she said, " I killed a bug yesterday with my finger." I gagged. She laughed.

After our conversation it hit me: now that I have my mini bug hit man—woman—what's stopping me? I could find something to bribe her with, and then unleash her to annihilate every creepy-crawly in the neighborhood! Hahahaha! All this power could go to my head. :)

Expanding

It turns out being in a creative funk for a few weeks was a good thing because I was forced to stop, step back, and take a break.  Now I have so many thing on the mind and hobbies to start I don't know where to begin!  Between skirts for my girls & myself.  Car seat canopy's, complete crib sets, ruffle blankets, and the new crayon rolls to go with our eco-baggies for back to school, it is going to be one fun Summer!  We are also going to be carrying Ruffle Diaper covers in MORE of a selection of color & size,  up to 2t!  Don't forget the beautiful vintage lace Rompers, perfect for photo shoots and everyday wear!  Soon we will have Premium Pettiskirts, not those standard ones that are, yes, cute, but not as full or poofy as a princess should have.  The premium skirts have 35+ yds of nylon chiffon w/ layer upon layer and SO full & extra poofy!!  The best part is they come in as big as 6T!  Not to mention I'm always designing hair accessories for our 3 beauties & yours =)

Creativity Funk

The past few weeks I've been in a creativity funk, I want need to try something different and have been searching with what has felt like no end in sight.  Seeing all the amazing things that others have created has inspired me.  See!  All those hours spent searching on pinterest was for a good cause, haha.  Between the baby bedding, skirts for me, coordinating skirts for the girls, and crayon rolls it is almost overwhelming!  Now that Spring is here is it also time to start making the back to school supplies.  It feels wrong on so many levels to have to think about back to school supplies when my girls are still in school.....

Porch Project

When we first bought this home in 2009 it was trashed to put it nicely.  Though when your looking at a foreclosed home around here it seemed to be normal which is sad.  Long story short, we had to gut and redo which took almost a year, did I mention I was 7 months pregnant at the time?  Now we are finally getting to the outside*yay*.  I didn't have a chance to take photos of the old porch as my husband is like a kid in a candy store when it comes to building things but you can see where it was built/how small.  The door was a 36" door but the porch was 32" at best.  So everytime a kid would run in the door it would slam into the porch.  Not something you want to worry about a 100x's a day in the summer.  This was suppose to be our Easter vacation project but when we had those 80 degree days in mid March my husband got really excited and had to build something.

Before(E&M)

Porch done, now to work on post for railings(my dad helping)

(my husband)

After

Vince wasn't sure how to cover up the opening of the porch with the post so he built a bench.
With the left over wood he is planning to make flower boxes around all the posts.

Can Goods Organization

I purchased a couple a shelf can organizers a couple months ago from shelfreliance and LOVE them!
No more falling cans, or having to move the old ones to the front when you buy new ones.  Now it's automatically done.  Of course that doesn't stop miss Kiley from rearranging the cans if we forget to lock the pantry door =)

*This was NOT endorsed by shelfreliance, these are my opinions.

Baking

I LOVE to bake, I would bake all day if it meant I didn't have to cook, & I wouldn't gain weight.  Sadly that will never happen, but a girl can dream =)  Just like you after dealing with kids, work, and housework the last thing you want to do it is bake.  Since that will mean you will be 1. stuck in the kitchen longer and 2. be forced to clean up that mess to.

The cost of the premade snacks from stores is insane!  My family loves things like muffins or granola bars for breakfast, now $3.99 for a 4 pack of muffins for our family is just not going to cut it.  Yes they taste great and are no work for you(since your clean up is recycling the container) but the cost to your budget is worse.  I have this friend that loves to try recipes and is always posting a new recipe.  She found this strawberry bread recipe that she made as muffins instead and after hearing her talk about them I had to try it.  They were amazing to say the least in our family's opinion.  Before this recipe my muffins were horrid, they would taste rubbery on the bottoms or really tough so I quit making them.  It wasn't until this recipe and many tutorials that I perfected them and can finally make an amazing muffin!  lol gone are the days of gagging.

When I make these I double and sometimes triple the batch!  I divide the rest into 2 day meal size portions and freeze them.  Make sure you get all the air out of the bag, some people use a straw and suck the air out from the bottom that way.  Just make sure you watch out for those muffin crumbs when doing it unless you like having something unexpectedly causing you to choke*speaking from experience*.   We can usually get 12-15 days worth of muffins doing this with minimal cost, especially when stores have strawberries on sale for a $1!  To purchase that in store you would be spending close to $60!!   To make the strawberry chopping quicker, I highly suggest a food chopper of some sort, I currently use the hand chopper from oxo.  You can take your frustration out on the chopper, so you can consider it a multipurpose tool ;)

I purchase my baking goods in bulk also such as
flour -25 pds $8 - warehouse store
sugar - 10 pds
brown sugar - 7pds $5 - warehouse store
baking soda
vegetable oil  1.25 gal

When we moved I was able to find a home w/ cabinets galore, I keep my basic baking ingredients in the cabinet above, and my baking drawer just off to the left.  When baking they are both opened and everything is right in reach!  I hate stopping to wash things while baking(as you can see from multiple measuring cups from Ikea), when I'm baking, I'm baking, cleaning will be done as soon as they are in the oven.  The cupboard below that drawer contains all the flour, sugars, oil, etc.

Here's the recipe http://www.vintagevictuals.com/2009/07/strawberry-bread.html

When making granola bars vs buying premades you know what is going into them, you don't have to worry about what artificial or preservatives have been added.

Granola Bars
3 C. any granola(I buy a granola cereal that's on sale)
1/2 C honey
1/3 C peanuts, other nuts, or chocolate chips
2 eggs

Combine well and press into a greased 8x8 baking pan.
Bake at 350 for 20 min's.
Makes approx. 9-12 bars.

Meal Planning

Some people think that I enjoy organizing and planning ahead, nothing could be farther from the truth.  I do not like it, but I hate chaos more, and that is what seems to happen when I don't.  I'm still getting the hang of working full time, raising 3 kids, running a home, & also being a teacher to a 1st & 3rd grader.  My husband works 50-70 hr weeks, never know when he will be home, and we never know if he will have a day off until the night before.  He averages 2-3 days off a month, on a good month it's more like 3-5.  All of this is the reason as to why I do what I do!  So if it is 1 in the morning and I'm heading to bed and I get the urge to organize? I do it! Odds are I will be to exhausted and not in the right frame of mind to do it later.  I am not a morning person.

The first place to start when getting your house more streamlined?  I think it's meal planning.  Meals are the one constant thing in your life that will never change, you have to eat, or at least your kids do.  Once you knock that challenge out of the way everything else becomes easier!  When I first started I would print off a 1 month calender and fill it out, now I fill out 3 months in advance so instead of stressing about it 12x's a year? I only have to do it 4x's a year =)  Eventually I would like to get it down to 1 or 2x's a year.  Stepping stones......

I don't use cookbooks, I hate clutter!!  I prefer to borrow books from the library, copy what I want and return.  I'm pretty sure with the amount of cooking, baking, and organizing books I check out each month they think I am a incapable of either and my house looks like a tornado went through.  I keep all my recipes in a accordion file.  I take out the recipes the night before, or I pin them to the fridge so I don't have to dig for them later.  I would love to make a cookbook scrapbook but since I change my mind so much it wouldn't work out to well.

Some places we've found great recipes our family will eat are
kraftfoods.com
allrecipes.com
tasteofhome.com

With 5 of us and crazy schedules I stick to basics, no fancy ingredients, should be on the table within 30 minutes-1 hour(unless crockpot) after starting, and as fresh of ingredients as possible.  I always keep staples such as
diced tomatoes
tomato paste
spaghetti sauce
black beans
cream of mushroom
noodles(spag, elbow, rotoni, penne, ziti)
spices
bread crumbs
kidney beans
olives
In our freezer you will find rows of frozen veggies, enough chicken and pork for a few months, and beef for an entire year.  When it comes to grocery shopping I stock  up on sale items, only the ones that we use of course.  I usually only hit 1 store a week, maybe 2, and a warehouse once every 2-3 months.  Shopping with 3 is exhausting I think, so I would rather spend more time on 1 trip then dragging them multiple times throughout the week.

Once finished filling everything out, as much as possible I keep everything together taped inside the cabinet by the oven.

Easter Surprise

My husband the man of procasination tends to put everything off until the last possible moment.  Not that I blame him, when you only average 2 days off a month you would too.  After visiting the Dentist and waiting for his script to fill he eyed the one thing that I cannot resist.  It is my drug of choice (and no Al, it was not a burger.....this time), chocolate carmel eggs.  What you don't see is that there is another row of chocolate goodness right below it.  He did very well =)

Valentines

Happy Valentines!  Yes, I am that annoying person(just ask my husband!).  I figure Valentines Day, Sweetest Day, & our Anniversary are 3 days out of 365 he can romance me with sweets, flowers, cards, or something along those lines.  Some people think what is the point when you can show it all year round.  In our house, when your spouse receives 2 days off a month its easy to forgot those things that a certain someone might like since days just blur together.  The girls and I are at home ALL day or at least it feels like it so for us it's easier to whip his favorite cookies or dinner.  My husband is an amazing provider for our family and is gone most days into the evening hours and goes to school on top of it.  So for him being 'romantic' is a bit more of a challenge since he doesn't know when he will get home or get another day off, etc.  Monday I jokingly told him, pick up my favorite cake and Breaking Dawn and I will be ecstatic.  After the kids went to bed he disappeared to his car and came back with those 2 items!  Since I guessed my gift I received them early =)  Perfect Valentines for me!

Workout

Remember the days when Friday nights meant you were going out for a date, possibly to dinner and a movie.  Now it consist of a crabby toddler waking up from nap and trying to get dinner into them as soon as possible.  Or pray daddy gets home fast with whatever he picked up to eat.  Then begins the bathtime fun while you wait and wait......and wait some more for each child to bathe which feels like an eternity.  Then after all that is over with you can work out.  Now our girls are insisting in working out with us.  We were doing P90X, I'm sure you've heard of that torture work out at least once.  It actually wasn't bad after awhile, you started to enjoy it, but then it becomes boring and their voices become annoying. You can only make fun of the voices so much before it becomes old.  So we(I) decided to try Insanity.  WHAT a nightmare, between dodging 1 kids feet and another running into me and the baby trying to knock you over w/ hugs and keep up, it's very interesting.

Water Wars

You always know kids are going to come up with something they are not suppose to do when you are not looking.  Though you bury your head in the sand hope that for once they will ACTUALLY do as they are told, today.....was not that day.  After waking up late, rushing to dress baby, feed kids, jump in the shower just to hear a bunch of giggling going on.  Not the 'oh my sisters are funny' haha kind.  The 'this is so much fun mommys not here' kind.  Apparently the girls were having a squirt gun fight in the kitchen WITH the water bottle that can spray 12ft in a steady stream to nail your target.  Except in the hands of 2, 6, & 7 y/o's they don't have much aim.  They're reasoning for all this?  The baby started it! I did in fact witness K taking the bottle and her sister grabbing it in which became a tug a war.  K won, she fired the water straight into her sisters face and yes we all giggled.  After the bottle was put away or so I thought I left and it turned into an all out war.  Kids....you just never know whats going to happen next.

Organizing Obsessed

January first, where we make our yearly 'goals' if you will.  I've been a firm believer in not putting things off that can be done today.  I will admit that I still make a goal list too.  You start seeing all the ads for losing weight, healthy snacks/cereals go on sale, workout gear and accessories go on sale.  Along with articles on 'how to organize' being everywhere you look.  I am obsessed with organizing books.  It makes no sense when you think about it since theres only so many ways you could possible organize something, and more then likely each book is saying the same thing just in different words.  Yet...I still get sucked in each and every year.

  • Every year I print off a calendar and plan 3 months worth of meals to hang in the cabinet by the stove.  After 3 years of tracking store sale prices I have a pretty good idea what is going to go on sale/when which makes it so much easier.

  • I keep all my recipes in a small accordion file also kept in a cabinet by my stove w/ everything divided up by meat types/baking/etc.

  • Since we have 3 bathrooms I keep all the cleaning supplies in a handy carrying case to tote from bathroom to bathroom, so no supplies are left in the house where little hands can get them.

  • All the kitchen drawers have specific uses, one is for baking(with separate baskets for measuring cups), then silverware, the one by the stove contains all the items you would need while cooking.  Another hosts all of our address books, office supplies, cords, etc, one misc kitchen gadget drawer, and the final 2 have ALL the girls hair accessories.  Kind of an odd place to put them but when you have 3 children and you spend most of your time in the kitchen cooking, cleaning, baking, working, homeschooling, it becomes the most used room in the house.  All of the cabinets are packed depending on uses too into baking, cooking, staples, snacks, and dishes.

  • Entryway has hooks for coats, baskets for each person, and everyone has their own rack to keep their shoes on.

  • Laundry room has baskets on wheels from Ikea where everything is already separated by type/color.  The girls all have their own basket, so no more sorting laundry on who's who.  Makes laundry that much easier/faster!

  • Make/Update a Spring, Summer, Fall, winter checklist.

  • New folders/labels to keep important documents.

  • Plan our shopping trips to malls for the entire year(to purchase after season clothes/items at a fraction of a price!)

  • I use a small accordion like envelope for coupons AND one for non food items/clothing receipts/ misc receipts you might need/ paint samples(in case you need to do a touch up you know what color you used!), coupons(since bed bath beyond seems to mail those like crazy!), etc.

  • Add every ones birthdays to the calendar.

I love new tips for things!  Feel free to share yours!
